PLAB conducts, WFC trades widely, CSC tumbles

Photronics Inc. (Nasdaq: PLAB) shares rose 14.6% to $7.70, on volumes of 2.1 million shares, compared to a daily average of 558,130 after the maker of semiconductor gears on Wednesday bolstered its first-quarter outlook.

Wells Fargo and Company (NYSE: WFC) traded in 41.8 million shares Wednesday, trumping its daily average of 30 million. Prices dipped 3% to $33.09, after the bank’s CFO left.

Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE: CSC) shares tumbled 14% to $48.64 Wednesday. Volume was 6.5 million shares, towering over a full-day average of 1.2 million shares, after the company cut its earnings-per-share and revenue forecasts for the full fiscal year.

DSW does it, CSCO steady, SMSI slumps

DSW Inc. (NYSE: DSW) shares gained 16.5% to $42.21, on volume of 1.4 million shares, or nearly five times its all-day average, after the shoe seller late Tuesday said it would buy Retail Ventures Inc. (NYSE: RVI) , its largest shareholder, in a merger that DSW said would reduce outstanding shares. RVI shares flew 13.6% to $18.11.

Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) traded in 34.7 million shares Wednesday, hunting down its daily average of 74.1 million. Prices nipped up 0.5% to $22.10. CSCO reports after the bell today.

Smith Micro Software Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI) shares tumbled 36.5% to $8.29 Wednesday. Volume was 7.3 million shares, towering over a full-day average of 491,000 shares, after the company suspended its new year forecast.

ATML vaults, C clicks, SWIR swoons

Atmel Corp. (Nasdaq: ATML) shares rallied 9.8% to $16.10. Volume for the stock was 14.6 million shares, compared to an all-day average of 10.3 million, after the maker of computer chips used in household devices reported fourth-quarter earnings that beat Wall Street’s expectations late Tuesday.

Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) traded in 64.1 million shares, making it a volume leader, but still below its average of 546 million. Prices demurred 0.5% to $4.86.

Sierra Wireless Inc. (Nasdaq: SWIR) shares declined 26% to $11.47, on volume of 3.6 million shares, squashing its daily average of 260,000, after the wireless-modem maker reported fourth-quarter profit that missed estimates late Tuesday.

CDNS higher, YHOO steady, AMP stumbles

Cadence Design Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CDNS) shares rose 7.5 percent to $9.49, on volumes of 10.4 million – more than quadruple its average — after the software maker forecast first-quarter earnings above expectations.

Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO) dealt in 24.1 million shares Thursday, topping its all-day average of 18.3 million. Prices for YHOO nipped up 1.7 percent to $16.85, after linking up with Zillow on a real-estate site.

Ameriprise Financial Inc. (NYSE: AMP) shares shed 7.1 percent to $58.07, amid volumes of 6.1 million shares, compared to an average of 1.8 million, after the asset manager’s fourth-quarter profit came in below expectations.

DSCI ascends, MSFT steady, TZOO mauled
