ARIA leaps, BAC busy, HDY takes beating

Ariad Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: ARIA) prospered 30.5 percent in price to $6.85. Volume was 10,153,861, or six times its full-day volume average, amid generally positive news in the drug sector.

Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) was an active trader Tuesday, dealing in 126,455,431 shares Thursday, compared to a full-day average of 228,170,000. Share prices were off, though, two percent to $14.95.

Hyperdynamics Corporation (AMEX: HDY) fell 16.9 percent Tuesday to $5.95. Volume for the stock was 7,220,720 shares, nearly five times its all-day average. Even so, experts point out that the shares are up more than an astonishing 500% over the past six months

SDIX soars, BAC busy, KV troubled

Strategic Diagnostics Inc. (Nasdaq: SDIX) shares shot higher 42.5 percent Wednesday to $2.65, on volume of 2,094,668 shares, towering over its full-day average of about 31,000. SDIX announced Wednesday its RapidChek SELECT Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) test system has been reviewed by FDA and determined to be equivalent in accuracy, precision and sensitivity to their current standard methods for poultry house environmental drag swabs and pooled egg testing.

Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) traded in 113,699,846 shares noon Wednesday, nearly half its all-day average. Prices for BAC moved forward 1.8 percent to $14.95, as part of a general upward trend for bank stocks.

K-V Pharmaceutical Company (NYSE: KV.A) fell 21.9 percent Wednesday to $1.78. Volume for the stock was 1,722,746 shares or nearly five times its daily verage, after the company said it was “evaluating its liquidity outlook” in light of a delay by U.S. regulators over approval of a treatment to prevent preterm birth.

PLA jumps, BAC busy, DV falters

Playboy Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: PLA) shares gained 16.8% to $6.08 Monday. Volume of 6,658,738 shares dwarfed its usual volume of 126,632, after the publisher said it had inked a deal with IconAcquisition Holdings LP to be taken private.

Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) traded in volume of 90,768,343 shares, catching up on its daily average of 222,870,000. Prices for BAC nipped up 0.6 percent to $14.33.

DeVry, Inc. (NYSE: DV) tanked 14.2 percent in Monday to $40.79. Volume for the stock was 1,839,619 shares, nearly double its daily average. DeVry University is one of the largest, private sector universities in North America, with nearly 93,000 students enrolled in the United States and Canada.

IBCP higher, BAC busy, MCP downward

Independent Bank Corp. (Nasdaq: IBCP) shot 42 percent in price Thursday to $2.30. Volume of 859,892 shares trounced its daily average of 140,452. IBCP is the holding company of Independent Bank, a Michigan-based community bank.

Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) was again among the volume leaders, trading in 156,548,729 shares, catching up on a full-day average of 218,378,000. Prices for the stock lost one percent to $14.36.

Molycorp Inc. (NYSE: MCP) fell 11% to $54.00 Thursday, on volume of 9,154,013 shares, better than double its daily average. Colorado-based MCP is the only rare earth oxide, or REO, producer in the Western Hemisphere.

MCP, BAC rally, ZLC fades

Molycorp Inc. (NYSE: MCP) gained 10.98 percent in price Monday to $55.38. Volume of 2,794,623 shares trailed only slightly its all-day average of 3,721,040. Colorado-based Molycorp, Inc. is the only rare earth oxide, or REO, producer in the Western Hemisphere and currently produces approximately 3,000 metric tons of commercial rare earth materials per year.

Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) traded in 93,476,332 shares catching up on its daily average of 212,722,000. Prices for the stock gained 4.87 percent to $13.99, following its announcement that it has agreed to buy back the loans sold by Countrywide Financial Corp., which it acquired during the financial crisis.

Zale Corp. (NYSE: ZLC) went south Monday, losing 6.10 percent in price to $4.00, on volume of 820,376 shares, pulling ahead of its full-day average of 794,515. ZLC is a leading specialty retailer of diamonds and other jewelry products in North America, operating approximately 1,900 retail locations throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, as well as online.
