ALJ leaps, PFE trades widely, SMSI sinks

Alon USA Energy Inc. (NYSE: ALJ) was a gainer on Thursday, picking up 13.3 percent to $7.34. Volume was 524,908, or six times its full-day volume average. Dallas-based ALJ is a controversial refiner and pipeline operator.

Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) traded in 39,682,127 shares Thursday, making it a volume leader, but still below its daily average of 45,751,100. Prices for PFE fell one percent to $18.19. PFE revealed Thursday and the company and its bankrupt Quigley unit are close to a deal with a group of alleged asbestos victims that would resolve Pfizer’s liability for billions of dollars in potential claims.

Smith Micro Software Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI) dove 14.5 percent in price to $13.42.Volume for the stock was 2,883,996 shares or nearly six times its full-day average. The company reaffirmed earlier guidance with sales and earnings midpoints well above the average analyst estimate.

SKH healthy, PFE prolific, CRWS loses steam

Skilled Healthcare Group, Inc. (NYSE: SKH) grew 11.9 percent in price Thursday to $10.69. Volume of 1,671,080 shares proved better than four times its normal daily volume. The Calif.-based SKH today announced it has updated its 2010 full year non-GAAP earnings estimates and expects consolidated revenue to be approximately $816 million to $819 million.

Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) traded Thursday in 116,762,111 shares, nearly triple its daily average. Prices for the stock inched up 0.4 percent to $18.18 to close Thursday afternoon.

Crown Crafts Inc (Nasdaq: CRWS) lost 11.4 percent in Thursday trading to $4.43. Volume for the stock was 116,796 shares, nearly 10 times its daily average. Louisiana-based CRWS projected net sales for fiscal 2011 to be in the $91.0 million to $93.0 million range.

CHGS, a leading China-based high-tech industrial materials manufacturer, today announced that it has entered into definitive agreements with several institutional investors for a registered direct placement of 2,500,000 shares of common stock at a price of $4.00 per share for gross proceeds of $10 million.
