CDNS higher, YHOO steady, AMP stumbles

Cadence Design Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CDNS) shares rose 7.5 percent to $9.49, on volumes of 10.4 million – more than quadruple its average — after the software maker forecast first-quarter earnings above expectations.

Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO) dealt in 24.1 million shares Thursday, topping its all-day average of 18.3 million. Prices for YHOO nipped up 1.7 percent to $16.85, after linking up with Zillow on a real-estate site.

Ameriprise Financial Inc. (NYSE: AMP) shares shed 7.1 percent to $58.07, amid volumes of 6.1 million shares, compared to an average of 1.8 million, after the asset manager’s fourth-quarter profit came in below expectations.

AN hits gas pedal, NWSA busy, CME falls

AutoNation Inc. (NYSE: AN) shares rose 12 percent to $31.65, on volumes of 3.7 million, four times its daily average, after the car retailer reported fourth-quarter results that beat Wall Street’s estimates.

News Corporation (Nasdaq: NWSA) dealt in 23.5 million shares, compared to its daily average of 14.4 million. Share prices jumped 5.3 percent to $16.84, after the media company announced better than expected Q2 earnings

CME Group Inc. (Nasdaq: CME) shares were off 4.9 percent to $299.78, on volumes of 1.2 million, compared to averages of 412,000 after the operator of the world’s largest futures exchange reported quarterly profit short of expectations.

EVPH answers call, HLWX active, CWBYF wobbles

Everybody’s Phone Company (Pink Sheets: EVPH) saw its shares pop 87.5 percent Thursday to 2.3 cents. Volume for the stock was 11.8 million shares, compared to a daily average of only 106,811. Thursday, EVPH announced a marketing plan for phone service in Texas from which it projects $10 million in profits.

Helix Wind Corp. (OTCBB: HLXW) proved among the popular micro-cap stocks Thursday, trading in more than 50.4 million shares, narrowly outdistancing an all-day average of 49.4 million. Prices skidded 12.5 percent to seven-100ths of a cent. The Poway, California HLWX is a renewable energy company.

Carthew Bay Technologies Inc. (OTCBB: CWBYF) moved backward 49.2 percent in price Thursday to three-10ths of a cent. Volume was 276,600 shares, compared to the 48,480 shares it usually trades in a day. Toronto-based CWBYF is a leader in subsurface printing and fabric dyeing technologies, providing products and services to the promotion, apparel, commercial furnishings and home decor markets.

DSCI ascends, MSFT steady, TZOO mauled

Derma Sciences Inc. (Nasdaq: DSCI) shares traveled 39.3 percent Thursday to $9.29 Thursday, on volumes of 494,316, compared to its full-day average of around 27,000, after learning its diabetic foot-wound drug met their mid-stage trial goal.

Microsoft Corporation (Nasdaq: MSFT) bought and sold 34.3 million Thursday, trailing its all-day average of 59.4 million. Share prices dipped back 1.1 percent to $27.63, after announcing MSFT may use a sale of debt products to reward shareholders.

Travelzoo Inc. (Nasdaq: TZOO) fell in price 15.6 percent to $44.52 Thursday. Volume was 1.3 million compared to a daily average of 281,000, after announcing quarterly EPS of 23 cents, compared to nine cents in the prior-year quarter.

FRG shines, CSCO busy, CCME staggers

Fronteer Gold Inc. (AMEX: FRG) shares traveled 38.6 percent to $14.46 Thursday, on volumes of 14.9 million, dwarfing its full-day average of 1.4 million, after announcing that Newmont Mining would acquire FRG.

Cisco Systems Inc, (Nasdaq: CSCO) traded in 35.7 million Thursday, catching an all-day average of 73.3 million. Share prices gained one percent to $21.83, after Oppenheimer pegged CSCO as a potential $25 stock.

China MediaExpress Inc. (Nasdaq: CCME) took a price header Thursday, sliding 22.6 percent to $12.86. Volume was 10.5 million or six times its daily average.
