ICGN up on upgrade, MSFT active, TESS is less

Icagen Inc. (Nasdaq: ICGN) ballooned in price 43.6 percent to $3.26 Wednesday afternoon. Volume of 3,889,370 shares dwarfed a full-day volume average of around 300,000. MLV Capital Tuesday upgraded ICGN from Hold to Buy.

Microsoft Corporation (Nasdaq: MSFT) traded Wednesday in 33,974,878 shares, better than half its full-day average of 54,463,100. Prices for the stock dipped 1.1 percent to $28.36.

TESSCO Technologies Incorporated (Nasdaq: TESS) toppled 17.1 percent Wednesday to $13.40. Volume for the stock was 127,818 shares, seven times its normal daily volume. TESSCO and GE announced Wednesday they would work together to produce crash-avoidance systems that stop trains without an engineer’s intervention.

GENE jumps, BAC busy, COOL freezes

Genetic Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: GENE) vaulted 65.8 percent to $5.57 Wednesday. Volume of 538,264 shares trampled its full-day volume average of 17,027.

Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC) was a volume leader Wednesday, trading in 99,658,930 shares, catching up on its full-day average of 217,463,000. Prices for the stock slid back 2.8 percent to $14.59, as lower prices for bank shares weighed on the markets.

Majesco Entertainment Company (Nasdaq: COOL) tanked 17.9 percent Wednesday to $1.15.  Volume for the stock was 1,426,060 shares, three times its normal daily volume. Tuesday, COOL reported quarterly net revenues decreased 2.2 percent to $23.4 million versus $23.9 million in the same period a year ago. During this same period, the Company reported an operating loss of $1.3 million, compared to an operating loss of $5.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2009.

HEV has momentum, S popular, BDSI headed to court

Ener1 Inc. (Nasdaq: HEV) showed a lot of energy Tuesday, advancing 23.6 percent in price to $4.55. Volume was a hefty 18,108,331, 30 times its full-day volume average. The lithium-ion battery maker announced it is teaming up with Wanxiang Electric Vehicle Group Ltd. to manufacture batteries for the Chinese market.

Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE: S) had busy trade, with 39,063,758 shares changing hands Tuesday, catching up on a full-day average of 53,171,100. Prices for the stock settled 1.2 percent to $4.39. Sprint said Tuesday that starting Jan. 30 it plans to charge an extra $10 a month for all smartphones getting unlimited data.

BioDelivery Sciences International (Nasdaq: BDSI) fell 13.1 percent to $3.32. Volume for the stock was 447,487 shares, nearly triple its all-day average. BDSI was one of several companies named Tuesday in a patent infringement lawsuit by MonoSol Rx, LLC.

LEE leaps, MRK trades widely, MCZ struggles

Lee Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: LEE) leaped 14.9 percent in price to $3.31. Volume was 808,866, or better than twice its full-day volume average, on reports the company enjoyed 38-percent better ad revenue in its first fiscal quarter.

Merck & Company Inc. (NYSE: MRK) was active Tuesday, dealing in 36,816,766 shares Thursday, better than twice its full-day average. Share prices were off, though, 0.8 percent to $33.95. Merck is teaming up with Ariad Pharmaceuticals on a drug to target cancerous tumors of the soft tissue or bone.

Mad Catz Interactive Inc. (AMEX: MCZ) skidded 16.5 percent to 96 cents, while volume for the stock was 2,819,600 shares, more than four times its all-day average. MCZ designs, manufactures, markets, and distributes accessories for videogame platforms, personal computers (PC), and iPod and other audio devices.

ARIA leaps, BAC busy, HDY takes beating

Ariad Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: ARIA) prospered 30.5 percent in price to $6.85. Volume was 10,153,861, or six times its full-day volume average, amid generally positive news in the drug sector.

Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) was an active trader Tuesday, dealing in 126,455,431 shares Thursday, compared to a full-day average of 228,170,000. Share prices were off, though, two percent to $14.95.

Hyperdynamics Corporation (AMEX: HDY) fell 16.9 percent Tuesday to $5.95. Volume for the stock was 7,220,720 shares, nearly five times its all-day average. Even so, experts point out that the shares are up more than an astonishing 500% over the past six months
