SCI gallops, CIM sings, AKAM trails

Service Corporation International (NYSE: SCI) shares garnered 16.2% to $10.56 Thursday, on volumes of 3.4 million shares, nearly four times its daily average, after the company reported revenue of $571.3 million and adjusted earnings per share of $0.18, easily topping estimates of $0.13.

Chimera Investment Corporation (NYSE: CIM) traded in 43 million shares Thursday, nearly triple its daily average of 14.8 million. Prices faded 1.7% , however, to $4.18, after reporting EPS for the year of 66 cents.

Akamai Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: AKAM) shares dove 13.9% to $41.32. Volumes of 32.2 million shares proved eight times its daily average, after a disappointing Q1 guidance.

SCON soars, BAC busy, TKLC tumbles

Superconductor Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: SCON) shares raced ahead 11.7% to $2.95 Thursday, on volumes of 1.6 million shares, already four times its daily average.

Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC) traded in 80.3 million shares Thursday, its daily average a hefty 190.9 million. Prices faded 0.9% to $14.52, after setting prices on mortgage bonds.

Tekelec Inc. (Nasdaq: TKLC) shares took a spill of 16.3% to $9.85. Volumes of 2.3 million shares better than tripled its daily average, after reporting Q4 loss of $8 million, or 12 cents per share, as revenue fell 27%, to $90.2 million.

WFMI comes to eat, C steady CSCO bruised

Whole Foods Market Inc. (Nasdaq: WFMI) shares gained 11.2% to $59.77, on volumes of 3.4 million shares, already twice its daily average, after the natural-foods grocer late Wednesday hiked its full-year earnings guidance.

Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) took its place at the head of the volume parade, trading in 112.7 million shares Thursday, making headway on its daily average of 544.3 million. Prices dropped 0.9%, however, to $4.80, after its Securities and Funds arm swore in a new Chief Operating Officer.

Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) shares declined 12.4% to $19.31. Volumes were 174.1 million shares, obliterating a daily average of 75.4 million, after the networking-equipment giant late Wednesday reported poor quarterly margins.

SWS goes into stratosphere, MSFT manages, NVTL goes lower

SWS Group Inc. (NYSE: SWS) improved 36.8% to $5.87 Wednesday, on volumes of 2.2 million or about six times its normal volume, after the brokerage house struck a regulatory pact to fix its bank woes.

Microsoft Inc. (Nasdaq: MSFT) traded in 32.2 million shares Wednesday, closing in on its daily average of 56.8 million. Prices dipped 0.8% to $28.07, on announcing it’s promoting Senior Vice President Satya Nadella, who was instrumental in the launch of Bing search engine, to lead one of its fastest growing and most profitable divisions — the server and tools business.

Novatel Wireless Inc. (Nasdaq: NVTL) shares tumbled 14.9% to $6.29 Wednesday. Volume was 2.3 million shares, more than triple its full-day average, after an analyst lowered his investment rating on the broadband services provider, citing increasing competition.

PLAB conducts, WFC trades widely, CSC tumbles

Photronics Inc. (Nasdaq: PLAB) shares rose 14.6% to $7.70, on volumes of 2.1 million shares, compared to a daily average of 558,130 after the maker of semiconductor gears on Wednesday bolstered its first-quarter outlook.

Wells Fargo and Company (NYSE: WFC) traded in 41.8 million shares Wednesday, trumping its daily average of 30 million. Prices dipped 3% to $33.09, after the bank’s CFO left.

Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE: CSC) shares tumbled 14% to $48.64 Wednesday. Volume was 6.5 million shares, towering over a full-day average of 1.2 million shares, after the company cut its earnings-per-share and revenue forecasts for the full fiscal year.
