QXM climbs, S steady, AVL settles back

Qiao Xing Mobile Communication Co., Ltd. (NYSE: QXM) grew 14.1 percent in price Thursday to $5.75. Volume of 1,242,177 shares proved better than five times its normal daily volume. QXM is among the leading players in the molybdenum-mining business.

Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) did fair volume Thursday, trading in 54,001,396 shares, nosing out its daily average. Prices for the stock inched up 0.7 percent to $4.65, after revealing its leading role in collaboration with UL Environment in the development of a new international sustainability standard for mobile devices.

Avalon Rare Metals Inc. (AMEX: AVL) was punished 12.3 percent in Thursday trading to $6.40. Volume for the stock was 6,431,980 shares, nearly five times its daily average. AVL is a mineral exploration and development company focused on rare metals deposits in Canada.

VG clicks, S sprints, FDO bogs down

Vonage Holdings Corp. (NYSE: VG) soared 17 percent in price Wednesday to $2.69. Volume for VG was 11,214,128 shares, more than its all-day average, as the company said that it added 6,000 lines in the most recent quarter — the first quarterly gain in subscribers in more than two years.

Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE: S) was a volume leader Wednesday, trading in 61,162,329 shares, or about 10 percent more than its daily average. Prices for the stock gained 4.5 percent to $4.65. The third-largest U.S. wireless carrier refused to purchase debt form Clearwire Corp. (Nasdaq: CLWR), which is running a risk of defaulting its loan agreements. Sprint shares rose on this news.

Family Dollar Stores Inc. (NYSE: FDO) dropped 8.4 percent Wednesday to $45.17, on volume of 8,908,228 shares, nearly five times its full-day average. FDO said that its fiscal first-quarter profit climbed 10 percent as more shoppers came to its stores to purchase items like candy and food.

Western Refining Inc. (NYSE: WNR) dipped in price 11.11 percent to $9.44 approaching noon on Monday. Volume was 3,253,715 shares, nearly double its full-day average. WNR is an independent refining and marketing company headquartered in El Paso, Texas.

MOV moves, S does brisk trade, CN sheds in price

Movado Group Inc. (NYSE: MOV) gained in price 21.99 percent to $15.20 in early afternoon trading Thursday. Volume was 176,688 shares, more than double its normal full-day average volume. The company based in Paramus, N.J., said Thursday that it earned $16.9 million, or 68 cents per share, for the three months ended Oct. 31. That compares with a loss of $20.9 million, or 85 cents per share, a year ago.

Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE: S) had great volume leaders Thursday afternoon, dealing in 87,500,069 shares, more-than double its full-day average of 44,845,900. CNinsure Corp. (NasdaqGS: CISG) dropped 21.17 percent early afternoon Thursday to $17.46, on volume of 1,560,720 shares, nearly twice-and-a-half its average daily volume. The Chinese-based CISG is a leading independent insurance intermediary company.
