NYNY comes up nuggets, MSFT big trader, LPTH slides

Empire Resorts Inc. (NasdaqGM: NYNY) gained 25.83 percent in price in Thursday afternoon trade to $1.51 Volume of 1,969,508 shares left its usual share volume of 164,241 in the dust. The casino operator announced last week that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Monticello Casino and Raceway, has added electronic roulette games to its increasingly diverse slot offerings.

Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqGS: MSFT) was among Thursday’s volume kingpins, trading in 46,986,893 shares Thursday afternoon, approaching its usual daily volume of 61,528,900 shares. Shares of the software giant inched up 1.17 percent to $25.87. Following the successful launch of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010, MSFT announced Thursday that the upcoming release of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 R2 will provide midsize customers with new contextual business intelligence capabilities and additional ease-of-use features that make actionable information more accessible than before to people across an organization.

LightPath Technologies Inc. (NasdaqCM: LPTH) fell in price Thursday by 12.61 percent to $1.97. Volume of 56,602 shares narrowly bested the company’s usual daily volume of 39,762 shares. The Orlando-based global manufacturer, distributor and integrator of patented optical components and assemblies announced Wednesday that it has expanded its direct selling channels in China as part of its strategy to deliver high volumes of aspheric lenses to Asian manufacturers of optical equipment.

SIHI climbs, MSFT a hot trader, NPD limps

SinoHub Inc. (AMEX: SIHI) gained 22.09 percent in price Wednesday to $3.04. Today’s volume was 2,531,278 shares, towering over its daily average of 71,867. Last week, the China-based electronics company reported Q3 sales of $55.8 million, a 54.1-percent jump over the prior-year quarter. Gross profit increased 58.1 percent to $10.2 million

Microsoft Inc. (NasdaqGS: MSFT) was among the most active stocks Wednesday, trading in 31,599,424 shares, its three-month daily average is 61,267,300, however. MSFT today announced the general availability of Microsoft Lync, the next generation of communications that connects people in new ways. Lync is a single platform that integrates instant messaging, presence, audio, video, web conferencing and voice to bring people together in the ways they communicate best, with one interface that works with the applications businesses know and use today, including Microsoft Office, Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft Exchange.

China Nepstar Chain Drugstore (NYSE: NPD) fell in price Wednesday afternoon by 17.1 percent to $3.98. Volume was 1,239,458 shares, more than tripled its three-month daily average of 371,977. NPD reported quarterly results Wednesday, which showed revenue was RMB597 million (US$89 million), reflecting a 7.3-percent increase compared to revenue of RMB556 million in the third quarter of 2009. Income from operations was RMB14 million (US$2 million), compared to a loss of RMB13 million in the second quarter of 2010 and a loss of RMB4 million in the first quarter of 2010

URRE roars along, MSFT sells widely, floods take toll on CAGC

Uranium Resources Inc. (NasdaqCM: URRE) jumped 18.55 percent in price Wednesday to $2.62, on volume of 6,915,808, or nearly four times its daily average. The Texas-based uranium company announced third-quarter financial results Monday, which featured cash at $10.5 million, compared with $11.4 million at the end of the trailing second quarter and $6.1 million at the end of 2009.

Microsoft Corporation (NasdaqGS: MSFT) was among the volume leaders in mid-afternoon trade Wednesday, with 38,505,718 shares changing hands. The corporation’s normal three-month daily average is 61,877,300. Share price for MSFT was up marginally; 0.19 percent to $27.00. The Redmond, Wash.-based company today announced the recipients of its Elevate America veterans’ initiative grants and the availability of new education, job training and placement programs to help give veterans and their spouses the skills and resources they need to be successful in today’s civilian workforce.

China Agritech Inc. (NasdaqGM: CAGC) took a pasting on its stock price of 19.61 percent to $12.42 in Wednesday trading. Volume was 2,862,213 shares, more than twice its daily volume average. The organic fertilizer maker said Wednesday its third-quarter net income fell 68 percent to miss analyst expectations as devastating floods in China damaged two million acres of cropland, hurting demand for its products.

Software giant Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) reported strong profit and sales growth in its first fiscal quarter, driven largely by sales of its flagship Windows and Office software and the launch of the latest blockbuster Halo video game.

For its first fiscal quarter ended September 30, 2010, Microsoft reported EPS of 62 cents. Analysts on average were expecting earnings of 55 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters. Operating income, and  net income a the quarter were $7.12 billion, $5.41 billion, which represented increases of 59 percent and 51 percent  respectively, when compared with the prior year period. Sales increased 25 percent to $16.2 billion, ahead of analysts’ $15.8 billion average estimates.

“This was an exceptional quarter, combining solid enterprise growth and continued strong consumer demand for Office 2010, Windows 7, and Xbox 360 consoles and games,” said Peter Klein, chief financial officer at Microsoft in a statement. “Our ability to grow revenue while continuing to control costs allowed us to deliver another quarter of year-over-year margin expansion.”

Among the highlights were a 15 percent sales growth in Microsoft’s Office 2010 software, and a 38 percent increase in sales of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 game console.

“We ended up in this great sweet spot in business spending that was re-emerging after the downturn,” Microsoft’s general manager of investor relations, Bill Koefoed, said in an interview. Increased business spending “aligned just perfectly” with Microsoft’s product launches, according to Koefoed.

Revenue from Microsoft’s Windows division increased 66 percent to $4.8 billion. Office and other business software brought in $5.1 billion, a 14 percent jump, over last year. The group that makes server software reported a 12 percent increase in revenue to $4 billion. Microsoft’s online revenue, which comes primarily from search advertising,  was up  8 percent to $527 million.

The company reaffirmed its operating expense guidance of $26.9 billion to $27.3 billion for the full year ending June 30, 2011.
