LEE leaps, MRK trades widely, MCZ struggles

Lee Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: LEE) leaped 14.9 percent in price to $3.31. Volume was 808,866, or better than twice its full-day volume average, on reports the company enjoyed 38-percent better ad revenue in its first fiscal quarter.

Merck & Company Inc. (NYSE: MRK) was active Tuesday, dealing in 36,816,766 shares Thursday, better than twice its full-day average. Share prices were off, though, 0.8 percent to $33.95. Merck is teaming up with Ariad Pharmaceuticals on a drug to target cancerous tumors of the soft tissue or bone.

Mad Catz Interactive Inc. (AMEX: MCZ) skidded 16.5 percent to 96 cents, while volume for the stock was 2,819,600 shares, more than four times its all-day average. MCZ designs, manufactures, markets, and distributes accessories for videogame platforms, personal computers (PC), and iPod and other audio devices.

SBIBW has wings, C, ALXA sink

Sterling Bancshares Inc. (Nasdaq: SBIBW) flew 60 percent in price to $3.12. Volume was 101,438, or five times its full-day volume average, amid reports this week that Cullen/Frost Bankers, Inc. may be acquiring the smaller bank.

Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) flew off the shelves Tuesday, dealt in 731,126,655 shares Thursday, already surpassing a full-day average of 549,838,000. Prices for C fell 5.5 percent to $4.86. Citigroup reported a $1.3 billion profit, compared with a $7.6 billion loss a year earlier. Revenue jumped to $18.4 billion, from $5.4 billion a year earlier, but fell more than 11% from the third quarter.

Alexza Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: ALXA) fell 19.2 percent in early trading to $1.35. Volume for the stock was 1,784,554 shares, nearly double its all-day average, on word that the company will file a new application for its drug candidate Adusuve Staccato in July.

SKH healthy, PFE prolific, CRWS loses steam

Skilled Healthcare Group, Inc. (NYSE: SKH) grew 11.9 percent in price Thursday to $10.69. Volume of 1,671,080 shares proved better than four times its normal daily volume. The Calif.-based SKH today announced it has updated its 2010 full year non-GAAP earnings estimates and expects consolidated revenue to be approximately $816 million to $819 million.

Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) traded Thursday in 116,762,111 shares, nearly triple its daily average. Prices for the stock inched up 0.4 percent to $18.18 to close Thursday afternoon.

Crown Crafts Inc (Nasdaq: CRWS) lost 11.4 percent in Thursday trading to $4.43. Volume for the stock was 116,796 shares, nearly 10 times its daily average. Louisiana-based CRWS projected net sales for fiscal 2011 to be in the $91.0 million to $93.0 million range.

QXM climbs, S steady, AVL settles back

Qiao Xing Mobile Communication Co., Ltd. (NYSE: QXM) grew 14.1 percent in price Thursday to $5.75. Volume of 1,242,177 shares proved better than five times its normal daily volume. QXM is among the leading players in the molybdenum-mining business.

Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) did fair volume Thursday, trading in 54,001,396 shares, nosing out its daily average. Prices for the stock inched up 0.7 percent to $4.65, after revealing its leading role in collaboration with UL Environment in the development of a new international sustainability standard for mobile devices.

Avalon Rare Metals Inc. (AMEX: AVL) was punished 12.3 percent in Thursday trading to $6.40. Volume for the stock was 6,431,980 shares, nearly five times its daily average. AVL is a mineral exploration and development company focused on rare metals deposits in Canada.

VRX jumps, NVDA busy, REE falls

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (NYSE: VRX) grew 16 percent in price Thursday to $34.75. Volume of 13,353,461 shares nearly quadrupled normal volume. Canada-based VRX is a multinational specialty pharmaceutical company that develops, manufactures and markets a broad range of pharmaceutical products primarily in the areas of neurology, dermatology and branded generics.

NVIDIA Corp. (Nasdaq: NVDA) did lots of business late Thursday, with 68,704,486 shares traded, four times its daily average. Prices for the stock gained 11.7 percent to $18.97. NVIDIA today announced the expansion of its NVIDIA® 3D Vision™ ecosystem with the addition of new 3D-enabled PCs and monitors by Lenovo.

Rare Element Resources Ltd. (AMEX: REE) fell 13.7 percent in Thursday trading to $13.85. Volume for the stock was 9,941,563 shares, nearly doubling its daily average. REE announced final 2010 assay results from seven additional rotary (reverse circulation) holes drilled on the Sundance Gold Project, Wyoming.
