UIS soars, BAC active, MWA submerged

Unisys Corp. (NYSE: UIS) shares rose 18.3 percent to $34.72, on volume of four million shares, trumping an average volume of 486,000, after the maker of mainframes reported fourth-quarter sales that topped estimates.

Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC) traded in 101 million shares, making it a volume leader, while only half its daily average. BAC shares were flat at $14.29, as the bank completed the sale of its Balboa Insurance to an Australian concern.

Mueller Water Products Inc. (NYSE: MWA) shares fell 15% to $3.75, on volume of 8.7 million, compared to an average of 1.9 million, after the pipe and valve maker reported a first-quarter loss that was larger than analysts had projected.

SCON super, F and ACLS slump

Superconductor Technologies (Nasdaq: SCON) shares vaulted 41.1 percent to $2.85, on volume of 5.1 million, overwhelming a daily average of about 105,000, after the company said it had produced samples of second-generation high-temperature superconductors that met customers’ specifications.

Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) traded in 117.4 million shares, making it a volume leader, besting a daily average of 93.1 million. F shares trailed Tuesday’s close, however, by 3.1 percent to $15.40, as the carmaker teamed with Gogo to offer buyers complimentary Facebook access.

Axcelis Technologies (Nasdaq: ACLS) shares declined 22.8 percent to $2.75 Wednesday. Volume for the stock was nine million shares, dwarfing a daily average of 1.3 million. Tuesday, the company reported higher Q4 profits as sales grew.

BIOR leads way, JUNP jumps with activity, CNSV drops

Biodrain Medical Inc (OTCBB: BIOR) stole the thunder from most other micro-caps Wednesday, growing 190.9 percent to 32 cents, on volume of 50,000 shares, quadruple its usual share volume. BIOR an early-stage medical device company and its mission is to provide hospitals and surgical centers an effective, efficient and affordable means to safely dispose of contaminated fluids generated in the operating room.

Juniper Group Inc. (OTCBB: JUNP) was a volume leader among micro-caps, dealing in 286.7 million shares, dwarfing its usual average of 12.7 million. Share prices also leaped, 25 percent, to one-10th of a cent, a day after reporting nine-month revenues had spiked to $2.1 million from $200,000 the previous year.

Consolidation Services Inc. (OTCBB: CNSV) dove 58.8 percent in price to seven cents Wednesday, on volume of 22,700 shares. CNSV is an oil and gas exploration company based in Kentucky.

NAVI goes sailing, INTC busy, ALVR goes south

NaviSite Inc. (Nasdaq: NAVI) shares advanced 31.7 percent to $5.44, on volume of 9.4 million, overwhelming a daily average of about 91,000, after cable and Internet-service provider Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE: TWC) late Tuesday said it would acquire the remote-server host provider for about $230 million.

Intel Corporation (Nasdaq: INTC) traded in 17.4 million shares Wednesday, trailing a daily average volume of 55.6 million. Prices for the stock improved 0.7 percent to $21.62, as the fallout continued from its billion-dollar chip error.

Alvarion Ltd (Nasdaq: ALVR) shares declined 11.3% to $1.96. Volume for the stock was 572,918 shares, better than twice its daily average, after the Israeli maker of wireless-broadband equipment reported a larger fourth-quarter loss.

MEMC a maniac, LVLT levels off, BRCM wobbles

MEMC Electronic Materials Inc.(NYSE: WFR) shares gained 10.6 percent to $12.86, on volume of 10.3 million shares, more than double its daily average, one day after the maker of silicon wafers reported swinging to a profit in the latest quarter.

Level 3 Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: LVLT) traded in 17.1 million shares, pursuing a daily average volume of 23.3 million. Prices for the stock sagged, however, 5.3 percent to $1.22, after reporting quarterly sales fell to $921 million from $924 million in prior-year quarter.

Broadcom Corp. (Nasdaq: BRCM) shares jettisoned 7.4 percent to $42.98, on volume of 14.2 million, better than double its full-day average, after the chip maker late Tuesday reported fourth-quarter margins beneath Wall Street’s expectations.
