BUCY jumps on M&A news, F sells on Focus news, THOR skips a beat

Bucyrus International Inc. (NasdaqGS: BUCY) exploded in price 28.67 percent to $89.58 Monday morning. Its pre-noon volume of 18,060,713 shares dwarfs its full-day average high of 1,896,260.  The jump comes on word that Caterpillar, the world’s largest maker of mining and construction equipment, is making a try for a $8.6-billion acquisition of Bucyrus International, a maker of draglines, drill, shovels and other equipment used by coal miners.

Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) was among the volume leaders Monday morning, dealing in 83,650,404, surpassing the car maker’s average daily volume.  The shares price hiked 4.23 percent to $16.99. Ford announced Monday that it will introduce the battery-powered Focus compact, its first all-electric passenger car, in 19 U.S. cities in late 2011.

Thoratec Corp. (NasdaqGS: THOR) headed south in price 19.22 percent as Monday’s clock approached noon to $25.00. Volume was 7,367,749 shares, better than seven times its daily average.  The Pleasanton, Calif.-based heart device maker made news last week in announcing it was selling its diagnostic test business to private equity firm Warburg Pincus LLC for $55 million.

NATC, HEWA, LNWZ enjoy hefty gains

Nature’s Call Brands, Inc. (OTCBB: NATC) boosted its stock price 50 percent to $0.15, on volume of 50,000 shares. NATC is based in Las Vegas, and is focused on the acquisition and exploration of international gold and silver mining properties located in regions that enjoy stable politics, sound economies and friendly business environments.

HealthWarehouse.com, Inc. (OTCBB: HEWA) gained 24 percent in price Thursday to $3.10. Volume in the stock was 12,514 shares. The Cincinnati-based retail mail-order pharmacy, announced Wednesday that it has placed a total of $4.3 million in equity and convertible debt with independent investors.

League Now Holdings Corp. (OTCBB: LNWZ) ballooned in price 248.96 percent Thursday afternoon to $0.43 cents on 4,200 shares. The stock has enjoyed a 52-week trading range of up to $5.58, prior to a recent 16:1 forward split.

PRPH points higher, F rolls off lot, AH ailing

ProPhase Labs Inc. (NasdaqGM: PRPH) charged ahead in early afternoon trading Thursday, gaining 32.69 percent to $1.38. Volume was 25,509 shares, or more than four times its daily average. The drug company, based in Doylestown, Pa., Wednesday reported quarterly net sales of $5.20 million for the three months ended September 30, 2010, compared to net sales of $4.98 million for the prior-year quarter. PRPH realized quarterly net income of $947,000, or $0.06 per share, compared to net income of $1.2 million, or $0.09 per share, the year before.

Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) sold widely Thursday, reporting volume in the early afternoon of 59,075,023 shares, compared to a full-day average of 69,745,000.  F shares stepped back 0.57 percent, though, to $16.55. Thursday, Ford Motor Co. Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally said the company “deeply” appreciates the efforts by President Barack Obama and Ambassador Ron Kirk to negotiate a “meaningful” free trade agreement with Korea. Ford will continue to work closely with the Obama administration and Congress to fully open the Korean market to American-made cars and trucks.

Accretive Health Inc. (NYSE: AH) fared not so well in early Thursday afternoon trading, falling in price by 10.15 percent to $8.76. Volume in AH stock was 323,279 shares, compared to a daily average volume of 104,111 shares.  The Chicago-based company, which helps hospital systems manage their revenue cycles, said Thursday it turned a profit in the third quarter. AH said its net income totaled $2.9 million, or three cents per share. In the third quarter of 2009, the company distributed $8 million in dividends on preferred shares, and reported a loss of $3.8 million, or 11 cents per share. Its revenue rose 18 percent to $158.4 million from $134.5 million. However, analysts expected a profit of six cents per share and $172.4 million in revenue.

SPPH, MRES, IROG surge

Spencer Pharmaceutical Inc. (Pink Sheets: SPPH) surged 53.32 percent in price by noon ET Thursday to 42.9 cents. Volume was 4.35 million shares. The Boston-based company announced Thursday that an unsolicited offer received on November 4, 2010 is at a premium of $0.97 per share, making the potential transaction valued at $245 million. SPPH has opted to continue to keep the purchaser’s name confidential until such time as a timeline can be presented and the approval of the board of directors can be obtained.

NeuroBiotech Corp. (Pink Sheets: MRES) surged 40.91 percent by midday Thursday to a price of 3.1 cents, based on volume of 1,611,044 million shares. The company, based out of Basel, Switzerland, is currently actively working towards the commercialization of natural products called “Neuroceuticals®”, specially designed to restore the nervous system equilibrium and improve the state of health as well as the quality of life of people affected by stress-related disorders.

Ironwood Gold Corp. (OTCBB: IROG) picked up 3.45 percent in price by noon ET Thursday to 12 cents. Volume in the stock traded at 834, 580 shares. Wednesday, the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based junior miner announced favorable results of the Mobile Metal Ion (MMI) soil survey that was completed October 12 at its Rock Creek property in Nevada.

BNVI perks, SIRI, FSGI falter

Bionovo Inc. (NasdaqCM: BNVI) climbed 31.68 percent in price to $1.33 near lunch time Wednesday, on volume of 1,604,200 shares, nearly nine times its daily average. The Emeryville, California-based company said Wednesday said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the clinical development plan for its lead drug candidate, Menerba, for treating hot flashes related to menopause.

Sirius XM Radio Inc. (NasdaqGS: SIRI) enjoyed healthy volume of 32,853,681 shares mid-Wednesday, ahead of the pace of its usual daily average volume of 74,982,700 shares. The satellite radio concern saw its stock price falter 2.01 percent to $1.46. Last week, SIRI reported third-quarter revenue of $722.5 million, up 15% from the prior-year quarter, and net income of $67.6 million, compared to a loss of $151.5 million.

First Security Group Inc. (NasdaqGS: FSGI) listed lower by noon ET Wednesday by 22.08 percent in price to $1.20. Volume in FSGI hit 71,627, more than four times its daily average. As of September 30, FSGI reported a third-quarter net loss of $30.2 million resulting in basic and diluted net loss of $1.92 per share for the quarter.
