CPE gains, BAC busy, TAL goes south

Callon Petroleum Company (NYSE: CPE) shares galloped 13.3 percent to $8.72, on volume of 680,235 shares, or 50 percent more than its daily average, after a recent poll predicting the Miss.-based CPE would outperform the S&P 500 going forward.

Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) dealt in 57.3 million shares, rapidly catching up on a daily volume of 87.7 million. Prices improved 1.1 percent to $13.75, on news that BAC is appealing a Nevada judge’s order that blocked 8,900 foreclosures in the state.

Talbots Inc. (NYSE: TLB) shares were off 6.7 percent to $5.57 on volume of seven million shares, compared to a daily average of four million.

NPS goes flying, F trades, ANR plummets

NPS Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: NPSP) shares climbed 28.9 percent to $9.91, on volume of 4.1 million shares, or more than eight times its daily average, after it said a study yielded positive results on its drug candidate for a rare bowel condition.

Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) was a volume leader Monday, trading in 61.3 million shares, rapidly catching up on a daily volume of 87.7 million. Prices, however, dipped one percent to $16.10, after Credit Suisse trimmed its price target by following the company’s 4Q10 earnings miss.

Alpha Natural Resources Inc. (NYSE: ANR) shares were off 7.3% to $53.70 on news over the weekend that it will acquire coal producer Massey Energy Co. (NYSE: MEE). Volume for ANR was 18.2 million shares, more than six times normal.

HP a champion, F makes deals, MUR dips on numbers

Helmerich & Payne Inc. (NYSE: HP) shares rose 9.8% to $56.80. Volume was four million shares, overwhelming an average of 1.1 million. The Tulsa energy-drilling company reported fiscal first-quarter earnings surged 65 percent, beating analysts’ expectations.

Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) traded in 51 million shares Thursday, compared to a daily average of 83.7 million. Share prices gained 2.3 percent to $18.80. Ford will post its fourth-quarter results early Friday, and Wall Street is looking for the auto maker to boast its biggest annual profit since the turn of the century.

Murphy Oil Corporation (NYSE: MUR) shares ditched 10.2 percent to $65.77. Volume was 9.5 million shares, proving more than six times its daily average. MUR had an earnings call scheduled for earlier this afternoon.

HLXW gets second wind, ELCR rolls off lot, IHCH not so healthy

Helix Wind Corp. (OTCBB: HLXW) climbed in price 14.3 percent Wednesday afternoon to eight-100ths of a cent. Volume for the stock 249.8 million shares, compared to an all-day average of 39.8 million. The Poway, Calif.-based renewable energy company announced today that it was recently awarded a Notice of Allowance relating to a United States patent application that was filed in 2007, covering segmented, helical rotors used in wind-driven turbines.

Electric Car Company Inc. (OTCBB: ELCR) dealt in 139.6 million shares Wednesday, in contrast with a daily average of 82.8 million. Share prices were flat, though, at one-100th of a cent. ELCR announced this week that it has executed an Exclusive Distributor Agreement to sell the Company’s limousines, custom vehicles, electric conversion vehicles and limo buses in China.

Integrated Healthcare Holdings Inc. (OTCBB: IHCH) sank in price Wednesday 60 percent to two cents. Volume for the stock was 26,000 shares, shy of its average of 39,871 shares. IHCH’s goal is to provide quality healthcare services in a community setting that are responsive to the needs of the communities that it serves.

BioFuel Energy Corp. (BIOF) – Buzz Stock of the Day

Shares of ethanol company BioFuel Energy Corp. (Nasdaq: BIOF) was up as much as 25 percent from Tuesday’s closing price in morning trading on Wednesday.

Shares of BIOF traded as high as $1.30 per share, up from Tuesday’s close of $1.05.

Ethanol companies caught a boost late last week after it was announced that the Thursday, the EPA approved the use of up to 15% ethanol in gasoline (E15) in vehicles produced from 2001 until 2006.  Previously, the maximum gasoline blend was 10 percent ethanol.

Although it may not have an immediate impact  the EPA nod is definitely a positive sign for the industry and companies like BioFuel Energy Corp., which engages in the production and sale of ethanol and its co-products primarily in the United States. The Denver-based company has two ethanol plants that produce 115 million gallons of ethanol per year that arelocated in Wood River, Nebraska and Fairmont, Minnesota. BioFuel Energy sells its products to its third party marketer and distributor.

For the three months ended September 30, 2010, BioFuel Energy Corp. reported net sales of $114.7 million, up 4 percent form net sales of $91.1 million reported for the same quarter a year earlier.

Shares of BioFuel Energy Corp. are down approximately 78 percent over the past three months.
