SWS Group Inc. (NYSE: SWS) improved 36.8% to $5.87 Wednesday, on volumes of 2.2 million or about six times its normal volume, after the brokerage house struck a regulatory pact to fix its bank woes.

Microsoft Inc. (Nasdaq: MSFT) traded in 32.2 million shares Wednesday, closing in on its daily average of 56.8 million. Prices dipped 0.8% to $28.07, on announcing it’s promoting Senior Vice President Satya Nadella, who was instrumental in the launch of Bing search engine, to lead one of its fastest growing and most profitable divisions — the server and tools business.

Novatel Wireless Inc. (Nasdaq: NVTL) shares tumbled 14.9% to $6.29 Wednesday. Volume was 2.3 million shares, more than triple its full-day average, after an analyst lowered his investment rating on the broadband services provider, citing increasing competition.
